Pike Takes the Field for Community Service
On Sunday, November 15th, the Lambda Zeta chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity along with friends participated in the Field of Dreams Workday.  The event was hosted by Tom Toscani, the manger of the little league baseball complex known as the Field of Dreams.  The complex relies on public upkeep and gathers help and manual labor from residents and groups willing to make the trip to Paoli.  On this day, there was plenty of work to go around, as several fields needed to be sodded, signs needed to be replaced, and the complex needed to be cleaned.  The day was a success, beginning at 8 am and ending shortly before 1 pm.  Using the tools provided and a good effort, the work was done efficiently and under the management of the Field of Dreams operations team.

St. Lucia Community Service
This past June, four brothers from Pi Kappa Alpha, Lambda Zeta Chapter (John Galleo, Joey Guarneri, Patrick Montgomery, and Kevin Murray) took part in an international mission trip. These brothers, accompanied by Kevin’s nephew, Alex Murray, traveled to the beautiful island of Saint Lucia to participate in some volunteer work with people of parishes staffed by the Redemptorist community of priests and brothers. The overall trip was intended to provide the participants with an opportunity to gain exposure to the lifestyle and culture of residents of the island while at the same time offering some aid to the local community. In the end, those involved from the States certainly received more than was given.

Three-Peat for Pike Beach Soccer Team

The Lambda Zeta Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha continued its tradition of competing in the annual Cape Express Beach Blast Soccer Tournament for their third year in a row.  Pike’s eight-man team was cheered on by more than 20 fellow brothers, as well as many family members and friends. The team won their respective bracket with winning scores of 9-6, 10-4, and 4-2. Pi Kappa Alpha prevailed in the finals with a nail-biting 4-3 win to be named the Men’s Open Division Champions for the third year in a row.  Over 950 teams play their games on 30x40 yard plots of sand on the beaches of Wildwood, NJ. Five players, four plus a keeper, compete in three 12 minute periods each game.

When the team was not playing their barefoot soccer matches, they were enjoying the beautiful weather and ocean water.  Much fun was had, many memories were made, and there are hopes of an even larger turnout next year.

Relay For Life 2009

Relay for Life

April 4, 2009

Drexel Armory

On April 4th, students flocked to the Drexel Armory with tents and other camping materials in preparation for 12 hours of well deserved fun. With over 60 teams and 450 individuals signed up for this year’s Relay For Life, people were able to celebrate the incredible feat of raising over $50,000. The 12 hour walk is an event designed to cultivate the spirit of collective efforts through fundraising and awareness in the pursuit to find a cure for cancer. Participants not walking participated in various activities including a pie-eating contest, Root Beer pong, Quizzo, Quoits, Raffles, a frozen t-shirt contest, and the widely popular ‘Ms. Relay’ Competition.

As always, Greek Life came out strong to support our chapter and this event. Every PHC sorority, a handful of MGC organizations, and the majority of IFC fraternities formed teams and raised 65% of the overall funds. Throughout the armory, pockets of Greek-lettered shirts and campsites made the presence of Drexel Greek Life apparent.  We are happy to report that the unity of Greek Life is presenting itself as an advantage to generate support for great causes such as this.  As we continue this tradition of Relay For Life in coming years, we are optimistic that Drexel Greeks will be at the forefront in our effort to Celebrate, Remember, and Fight back against cancer.
